46 MILLION
Stephen Eichhorn
WHAT: An online art auction and fundraiser to promote universal health care, specifically a public option to compete with the insurance industry and keep them honest. Money raised will be donated to Democracy for America Now, a national advocacy group that is running television ads to push the Public Option in democratic swing districts and offering support to congress members who take a stand for the policy.
Anders Nilsen
WHO: The fundraiser is being organized by Anders Nilsen, a Chicago based artist and graphic novelist featuring nationally and internationally recognized cartoonists and artists around the country. Participating artists include: John Porcellino, Genevieve Elverum, Chris Ware, Ivan Brunetti, Dan Clowes, Phil Elverum (Mount Eerie), Jeffrey Brown, Paul Hornschemeier, Todd Baxter, Sonnenzimmer Print Studio, Adam Henry, Kevin Huizenga, Jay Ryan (The Bird Machine Print Studio), Lynda Barry, Lilli Carre, David Heatley, Kyle Obriot, Stephen Eichhorn, Buenaventura Press, Sammy Harkham and the organizer, Anders Nilsen.
Kyle Obriot
WHY: In light of recent events, this is a desperate attempt to do something rather than just sit idly by while a few giant corporations with something to lose goad a gullible few into scaring their elected representatives away from real change. We’re doing this because the richest country the planet has ever known has no excuse to not take care of its citizens. We rank 37th in the world in overall health care performance, according to the World Health Organization. Right now a million Americans declare bankruptcy every year because of lack of adequate insurance. Hundreds of billions of dollars are wasted on redundant and impenetrable insurance company bureaucracies. We spend vastly more money on health care and wind up with far worse outcomes than other comparable countries. For many of the artists involved in this auction, a real health care bill is exactly the kind of reason we voted for Obama and Congressional Democratic majorities last Fall. To sit by and do nothing while Obama’s first significant initiative twists in the wind is simply not an option.
Todd Baxter
WHY #2: Like millions of other working Americans, a lot of artists and freelancers in this country are denied affordable health insurance simply because they are self employed. Making access to health care dependant on a person’s employment status is arbitrary and unsustainable.
WHERE: The auction of the artists’ works will be held on Ebay. To find them and to bid go to ebay.com and search for 46 Million.
or click HERE.
WHEN: The auction will start Thursday August 27th and end Sunday September 6th, in 10-minute increments starting at 2pm CST.

Just received a copy of the Paris-based weekly, Courrier International, that features some work of mine. This is a special issue of Courrier International that is part of a larger biannual theme on Health and Medecine. The idea for this particular issue was to "illustrate" the magazine using works of fine art. The collage below was published along with an article regarding ethnobotany and the uses of medicinal plants in modern medicine.

HOUSE PLANTS
Solo show by Chicago-Based Artist Stephen Eichhorn
Opening Reception Friday, September 12th, 6-9pm
Cairo proudly presents House Plants, new work by promising young artist Stephen Eichhorn. Opening Reception Friday, September 12th, from 6-9pm. Eichhorn will be in attendance.
Stephen's Website
Chicago-based artist Stephen Eichhorn creates delicate hand cut paper collages from reproductions of foliage - palm fronds, grasses, leaves and flowers. Mining a variety of sources including National Geographic magazines and the dead stock of 70's and 80's wall coverings, he composes works that mimic the natural world, and yet seem almost outside reality. Eichhorn's work formally transcribes the simplest elements of the pastoral onto a conceptual framework, generating a visual language exclusive to its own world, one rooted in anthropology and humans quest to understand and recreate architecture found in nature. The final product eerily retains a sense of its origins.
House Plants is an allusion to both the source material and the popular use of the plant as a structural object. Banal & everyday, but also an artful cultivation of structure and form, the hand and sensitivity to the plant form are the mystique of his pieces.
House Plants will be on display in the Cairo gallery space through October. Exhibition to include a window installation with fellow Chicago Artist, Cody Hudson.

BUCKET RIDER GALLERY announces Tristes Tropiques, our first solo exhibition of new collages by Stephen Eichhorn, in Galleries One and recent paintings by Katie Herzog in Gallery Two.
Chicago, IL, June 13, 2008 – Bucket Rider celebrates the summer with a series of new works by Stephen Eichhorn and Katie Herzog. We present new hand cut collage works by Stephen Eichhorn. in Gallery One and recent paintings by L.A.-based artist Katie Herzog in Gallery Two.
Chicago-based artist Stephen Eichhorn creates delicate paper collages from reproductions of foliage (palm fronds, grasses, leaves and flowers) cut by hand mining a variety of sources including National Geographic magazines and the dead stock of 70’s and 80’s wall coverings. He reassembles these elements into something outside of the reality of the natural world. Formally transferring the simplest elements of the pastoral into conceptual sculpture, he takes a cue from theoretical or invisible architecture, creating another created world, wholly existing on its own terms and with its own visual language. The final product eerily retains a sense of its origins: his constructions feel as if they could exist in reality but clearly do not. They simultaneously offer a vestage of the world around us while also acting as a reminder of the way that we mediate every part of it into something that is our own.
The title of Eichhorn’s exhibition is taken from Claude Lévi-Strauss’ influential study of the same name and is used to loosely reference the author’s encounter of the elements of otherness and his attempts to arrange and describe his experiences. Detailing the creation of an abacino, or fire fan, Lévi-Strauss explains, “there are several ways of solving the problem and several kinds of palm leaf [and] it is possible to combine leaves and methods to produce every conceivable form, and one can make a collection of specimens illustrating these miniature technological solutions.” Eichhorn is also creating solutions, albeit aesthetic ones, to the world around him.
Stephen Eichhorn lives and works in Chicago. He received his B.F.A. at the Art Institute of Chicago. He will be part of upcoming exhibitions at Josée Bienvenu Gallery in New York and the Illinois State Musuem this summer. His work is included in a number of private and corporate collections, including a recent acquisition by Fidelity Investments. This is his first exhibition with Bucket Rider Gallery.
Katie Herzog creates luscious, painterly canvases employing multiple surfaces and playing with perspective. Her paintings in Gallery Two were created while the artist was working with children at a library. They depict scenes of enrapture and the struggle to communicate and connect.
Katies Herzog lives and works in Los Angeles. She received her M.F.A. from UC-San Diego and participated in the Skowhegan program in 2007. She has been part of group exhibitions at Gavin Brown’s Enetrprise in New York and Western Projects in LA, and will have her second solo exhibition at Circus Gallery in L.A. this fall.
